Economical foods (also known as store brands) are considered a regular to mid grade food. Generally speaking they contain a high percentage of filler ingredients and require large amounts per feeding. Premium Foods (also known as holistic, natural or organic brands) consist of well-balanced, high quality ingredients and are ultimately more economical than the typical store brand.

The typical pet food label contains three main areas. The Guaranteed Analysis specifies the product's minimum percentages of crude protein and crude fat. Pet Food Ingredients are listed on the label in descending weight order, however, weight includes moisture, which makes overall interpretation difficult.
